‘The Hunger Games ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ Release Date and Plot

  • Author Suzanne Collins has written another entry in her best-selling The Hunger Games series.
  • The new novel is called Sunrise on the Reaping, and it’ll be out in March 2025.
  • The book takes place 24 years before The Hunger Games.
  • A movie adaptation has also been announced, releasing in November 2026.

Readers who have finished The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes — or even fans who just went out to see the movie last November — might have thought that was the last they’d see of Panem for a while. But author Suzanne Collins had other things in mind, and she’s written another entry in the Hunger Games series, Sunrise on the Reaping, which will come out this spring.

Fans looking for more information about Katniss Everdeen and company — or even those who have an attachment to Lucy Gray Baird and a young Coriolanus Snow — might have to adjust their expectations, though.

Sunrise on the Reaping takes place between Songbirds and Snakes and The Hunger Games — 24 years before Katniss’s first competition, to be exact. It opens at the Reaping for the 50th Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Some fans with quick brains and good memories have already speculated that Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss’s beleaguered mentor, might feature heavily into these Games. (Real, or not real? We’ll all have to wait and see.)

For those who can’t wait to get their hands on it, well, we still have a little bit of time before we can read it. Sunrise on the Reaping won’t be out until March 18, 2025. (That’s not that long, is it?) The book is available for pre-order on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble, and those who have read it promise it’ll be worth the wait.

“Suzanne Collins has done it again, bringing us back to the world of Panem in order to ask us important questions about our own world,” says Scholastic trade president Ellie Berger in a press release. “Sunrise on the Reaping is a remarkable book, bringing new complexity, perspective, and revelations to a piece of the Hunger Games story that readers have longed to know more about.”

Until then, there is something else that fans can pre-order if they want to brush up on the series in a new way before the next book comes out. The Hunger Games: Illustrated Edition comes out October 1, and features amazing pictures by artist Nico Delort. Or, for those who want a quick refresher, the movies are all streaming on AMC+, except The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which is currently on Starz. And Sunrise on the Reaping? The movie premiere date is already set, announced in an Instagram post that was nothing if not short and sweet: “Welcome to the Second Quarter Quell. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – in theaters November 20, 2026.”
