MEDIEVAL EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP | Ashmolean Museum

Part of our Making a Mark season

One-day practical workshop

This event is in-person only and will take place in the Museum’s Learning Studio

NB this event is now FULLY BOOKED

With embroidery expert Tanya Bentham

Flinders Petrie, the famous British Egyptologist and archaeologist, catalogued the marks that people made throughout history. He was fascinated by the florals and geometric patterns repeated in just about every civilisation. The same obsession with pattern is found in the history of needlework.

Join us to learn German brick stitch, a type of counted-thread embroidery that is done by counting the fabric threads. This counted stitch method flourished in northern Europe from the late 13th to 15th centuries.

With our expert’s help, you’ll produce a medieval embroidery combining several designs of your own choice, using authentic materials and designs. You’ll be taking inspiration from medieval manuscripts and book illustrations, as well as stitched examples.
