Former Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq tells us he hopes bringing a new book out, will help to continue raising awareness around racism.

Rafiq has released ‘It’s Not Banter It’s Racism’ today and it comes following his experiences at the club.

He told us how him speaking out, has already helped to call out inappropriate behaviour.

He said: “When a parent rings you up and says my daughter went into a dressing room and called the P word, that was the negative side of it, but the positive side was, because of your testimony, she came up and told us, and we dealt with it.

“So at least a young girl didn’t do what I did and look the other way and try hide it.”

During his time at Yorkshire County Cricket Club, he revealed he experienced racism and abuse.

Rafiq settled a tribunal cases against the club in 2021 – and received an apology from its former chair.

Rafiq also said: “It’s important to keep making sure that things that I’m passionate about, and you know, also those that are calling me for help, that I keep using my voice to get across what they’re trying to get across to me.

“So look, I’m incredibly proud today, in the whole last few years, four years I have really struggled to see any wins anywhere, but this to me is a significant moment.”
