Interview With The Vampire Season 3 Book Adaptation Revealed By Creator As Show Awaits AMC Renewal

While no third season has been commissioned just yet, creator Rolin Jones teases which book AMC’s Interview with the Vampire will adapt to television next. Interview with the Vampire stars Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac, who opens up to interviewer Daniel Malloy (Eric Bogosian), looking back on his undead life, the relationships he had, and those he loved and lost across 12 lives. The series features many modernized elements that bring Anne Rice’s written works into a contemporary setting, though the first two seasons focus on the events of her 1976 novel.

With Interview with the Vampire season 2, episode 6 ending with the shocking return of Sam Reid’s Lestat in the lead-up to one of Louis’ most tragic memories, Jones teased to Collider which novel the series would adapt next should it return for season 3. While the show hasn’t hesitated in using elements from later installments in Rice’s series, the showrunner named The Vampire Lestat as the next novel he hoped to focus on. The next book I would do would be The Vampire Lestat.
I have no idea who makes the decisions about why things are titled what they are. I think it’s called The Vampire Lestat. That’s what I think it’s called, so that’s what I would like to make. We’re already pulling from other books. We’ve pulled from The Vampire Lestat. We’ve pulled from The Queen of the Damned. We’ve pulled from The Vampire Armand. We’ve pulled a little bit or at least some seeds from The Body Thief. There’s some stuff from Prince Lestat. We’ve read them. We’re building these things as if they’re all one giant thing.

Does AMC’s Interview With The Vampire Set Up Changes To The Vampire Lestat’s story?

For longtime readers, it is perhaps unsurprising that Jones hopes to focus on the events of The Vampire Lestat for a potential Interview with the Vampire season 3. Released in 1985, nine years after the first novel, The Vampire Lestat throws the events of the first book into question, as Lestat is finally able to offer his own recollection of his life leading into the modern day through an autobiography. While moments of Lestat’s past were disclosed to Louis, including his monastery education and turning, they have been fragments from Louis’ perspective, casting doubt on their reliability.

Furthermore, Interview with the Vampire‘s modern-day plot is sure to lead to many deviations. Not only does the series reveal that Louis’ original interview went unpublished and adds a second account of his life to the story, but it also adds a modern-day tale of manipulation to Louis, Daniel, and Armand’s experience. As such, it is currently unclear where Lestat fits into the equation, and whether he is aware of Daniel’s original novel due to unseen events between the 1973 interview and Louis’ do-over. With Daniel’s work unpublished, perhaps Lestat has yet to make his grand encore.

While Interview with the Vampire has been unafraid to stray from the original novel’s plot to incorporate later elements and add new angles to Louis’ tale, it is clear Jones still has an eye on unfolding the story in a way that still remains faithful to Rice’s original work. As such, with season 2 set to bring Louis’ interview to a close, diving deeper into Lestat’s past may be a perfect way to keep the cast together while introducing deeper vampire lore. Furthermore, with an all-new present setting, the show can explore just how Lestat reinvents himself.

Based on Anne Rice’s novel series that began in 1976, Interview with the Vampire is a gothic horror fantasy series that explores the life of Louis de Pointe du Lac through an interview with a journalist. Told through flashbacks of Louis’ life during the interview, the series examines Louis’ relationship with the vampire that turned him, Lestat de Lioncourt, and a teenage girl named Claudia, whom he turns. The series is the first of Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe media franchise.
