Lucy Foley’s latest locked-room mystery, the ‘Midnight Feast’ hit bookshelves on June 18, however, fans are divided based on this one trend amongst her books so far. Here’s why!

Having hit the shelves on June 18, Lucy Foley’s latest novel ‘The Midnight Feast‘ joins her ever-impressive literary collection of thriller novels, however, fans are still unhappy with how her newest entry has unfolded.

What Is The Midnight FeastAbout?

Occupying a niche called a ‘locked-room mystery’ genre, the book is similar to Foley’s previous books like ‘The Paris Apartment’ and ‘The Guest List’, featuring a substantive cast of characters with their motives and agendas. However, this is paired with Lucy Foley’s use of multiple points of view, which has been a divisive choice amongst fans of her previous books for being too predictable.

In ‘The Midnight Feast’ Foley crafts a complex narrative by switching between various characters’ perspectives at a secluded luxury resort. While this approach allows for a deep dive into the tensions between the wealthy guests and the locals, fans of her other books have been quick to notice that the character archetypes of each new novel largely remain the same

Traditionally, a multi-POV structure excels in building suspense and mystery in a thriller novel, since you never really know the crucial details available to each character and jumping between different viewpoints lets you uncover the mystery in a much more exciting way. However, the rapid switching between characters in ‘Midnight Feast’ has the effect of stopping readers from forming a strong bond with any of the characters at all, especially in a story with a predictable cast.

Why It Works (and Why It Doesn’t) for The Midnight Feast?

The writing choice has both its critics and appraisers. ‘The Midnight Feast’ ultimately caters to readers who enjoy intricate plot twists and suspenseful storytelling, prioritising the thrill of solving a mystery over character development. While this approach may be engaging for some, those looking for a character-driven narrative with deep emotional resonance might feel unsatisfied.

Foley’s divisive use of multi-POV storytelling continues to be a defining feature of her work, with ‘The Midnight Feast’ offering a thrilling mystery that may leave character lovers wanting more. Whether this trade-off appeals to readers depends on their preferences in a thriller.
