Lake District mountain rescue teams supported by new book

Penned by Geoff Stebbens, ‘Walking in the Industrial Past of South Lakeland’ will explore the history of the region’s favourite fells as well as raising awareness of the dangers that come with exploring them.

Thanks to help from Richard Parsons of CGP books at Broughton-in-Furness, all proceeds raised from the book sales will go towards helping mountain rescue volunteers across South Lakeland including the teams at Coniston and Duddon and Furness.

Geoff said: “Having written two books on the Duddon Valley and having done a lot of fell walking along with being a member of the Earby Mines Research Group, I decided that it was time that our modern-day tourists knew that the paths they tread were not put there for their benefit.

“They were actually paths used by quarrymen and miners getting into the fells to the places where they worked.

“I also wanted to emphasise the dangers of entering these mine workings and that the men and women who man the Mountain Rescue are all volunteers and put themselves at risk when they are called out.”

The book takes the reader through a series of walks available in the area, providing backstories, first-hand accounts, and vital advice for anyone looking to take on the challenges.

Geoff explained: “I emailed Richard [Parsons] explaining what my aim was and, to my utter surprise, he replied saying it is the sort of thing his company would take on.”

The book will be available to buy from branches of the mountain rescue teams and will cost £7.99, whilst delivery can also be arranged for an additional postage fee.
