New exhibition of art, sculpture and photography at the HAC

Titled ‘To All Those Who Have Wings’, the exhibition includes some remarkable paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography.

The self-taught artist has produced an amazingly diverse range of work over nearly 70 years.

A prominent feature of the new show will be Loney’s dramatic images of crows in flight, all derived from the observations of nest building outside the windows of his studio.

But wings are only a small part of the exhibition, which also includes colourful abstractions, portraits, charcoal drawings of dancers and photographs of his eccentric but ephemeral beach sculptures.

And the opening of the exhibition in Irvine comes alongside a new book on Hugh’s work, written by Susan Bradbury.

In ‘Hugh Loney, Artist’, Susan writes: “Hugh Loney walks Irvine beach in all weather and all seasons and – his his words ‘makes art with whatever washes up at his feet’.

“He chooses trees or branches to lift from the strand line and plants them in the sand to stand again for a while.

“Sometimes they survive a few days, sometimes the sea reclaims them quickly; either way, Loney is content to surrender his art to the tide.

“But before each work returns to the water, he makes a photographic record, adding to thousands of images of earlier ephemeral constructions.

“He is alert to embrace a sunset or a dark cloud, on the lookout for a reflection or shadow to add depth and he doesn’t hesitate to include a passer-by but mainly he is documenting the transient.”

You’ll be able to pick up copies of the new book at the exhibition which officially opens at the Harbour Arts Centre on Friday, July 12, following a preview on Thursday evening.

You can see Hugh’s work at the HAC on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

The exhibition’s final day is Saturday, August 24.
