The work of number of writers with connections to the Athlone and South Roscommon area features in a new anthology which was launched in Boyle on Friday, June 28.

King House in the county Roscommon town was the vibrant setting for the launch of ‘A Word in Your Ear – Roscommon New Writing Anthology 2019-2023’.

The event celebrated the remarkable literary talents emerging from the Roscommon area over the past four years.

Showcasing an eclectic mix of short fiction and poetry, the anthology reflects the rich tapestry of voices and stories from the region. The evening was a testament to the thriving literary community in Roscommon, drawing a large and enthusiastic audience.

Included in the anthology from this area were Amy Abdullah Barry, Aisling Bradley, Tadhg Carey, Christa de Brún, Rory Duffy, Aoife Duncan, Eamon Gordon, and Anne Rigney, amongst others.

In conjunction with the book launch, the Roscommon New Writing Awards winners and runners-up were announced. The awards, which recognise excellence in short fiction and poetry, highlighted a wide range of talents.

In the short fiction category, the winner was Carol Beirne and her entry, ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’. Runner-up was Robert McGowan for his work, ‘Albert Riddle’s last ride’.

In the poetry category, the winner was Jacqueline Duignan’s ‘Ode to Blue’, with ‘Stripped bare against the sky’, by Noelle Lynskey, the runner-up in the competition.

The event was graced by readings from the anthology’s contributors, offering a tantalising glimpse into the diverse and powerful stories and poems within its pages.

‘A Word in Your Ear’ not only celebrates the writers of today but also inspires the literary voices of tomorrow. A very limited number of copies of the Anthology are available to the public at Aras an Chontae in Rocommon. Please contact abutler@roscommoncoco.ie if you wish to avail of one.
