Ever since Richard Osman published his debut novel, The Thursday Murder Club, in 2020 to great acclaim, the question on everyone’s lips has been: when is this being made into a film? And, more importantly, who will play everyone’s favourite unsuspecting sleuth, Joyce?
Well, now we have all those answers, and more.
The Thursday Murder Club movie is currently in production! It is being co-produced by Steven Spielberg’s production company Amblin and Netflix, while Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone filmmaker Chris Columbus has been brought on board as writer and director. With names as big as this already attached to the film – as well as a cast that boasts the absolute best of British acting talent – we’re quietly confident that we can expect big things from The Thursday Murder Club movie.
Here’s everything we know so far about The Thursday Murder Club movie…
What is the storyline of The Thursday Murder Club?
Netflix has humorously described the film as “a whodunit with teeth — false ones, of course.”
As far as we know, the film will follow the same storyline as Richard Osman’s bestselling book. It follows a group of friends, Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron and Ibrahim, in a retirement home who gather every Thursday to solve cold case murders for fun. But when one thing leads to another (as all good cases do), the gang find themselves caught up in a very real and dangerous case – and they’ll stop at nothing to help the police catch the right suspect.
Who will star in The Thursday Murder Club?
Most of the cast has now been announced, including Dame Helen Mirren as former spy Elizabeth, Celia Imrie as former nurse Joyce, Pierce Brosnan as trades union official Ron and Sir Ben Kingsley as psychiatrist Ibrahim.
With filming underway, a first look at the cast in character and on set has been shared – and it’s got us even more excited than we already were.
Naomi Ackie is to play police constable Donna de Freitas, Jonathan Pryce is Elizabeth’s husband, Stephen, and Osman’s wife, Ingrid Oliver, has been signed up for the role of Joyce’s daughter Joanna.
Rounding out the supporting cast is David Tennant, Richard E. Grant, Tom Ellis, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Geoff Bell, Paul Freeman and Sarah Niles, however we don’t yet know which roles they’ll each be playing.
On his podcast The Rest is Entertainment, Richard Osman said, “I think this is the greatest British cast assembled since the [Harry Potter] movies.” We couldn’t agree more.
When and where can I watch The Thursday Murder Club?
The film will be available to watch on Netflix, however a release date hasn’t been revealed yet. With filming currently underway, it’s fair to assume we won’t see The Thursday Murder Club on screens until at least 2025.
