Renée Zellweger to Star in New Adaptation of James Patterson Novel

Renée Zellweger is attached to star in a new television series. The actress is set to lead Max‘s upcoming James Patterson adaptation of his novel 12 Months to Live.

Per Variety, the two-time Academy Award-winning actress has found a new television series in James Patterson’s adaptation. Zellweger, who won the Oscars for 2019’s Judy and 2003’s Cold Mountain, has also been nominated twice for 2002’s Chicago and 2001’s Bridget Jones’s Diary. While she is mostly known for her roles in feature films, Zellweger made her series regular television debut with the Netflix series What/If, and also starred in the true crime limited series The Thing About Pam.

Producer Denise Di Novi promises that the sequel will remain faithful to the source material.

The adaptation of 12 Months to Live is currently in development at Max. The upcoming project currently titled Jane Smith, will have Zellweger in the lead role, playing the titular character. James Patterson wrote the book with Mike Lupica and Mike Johnson is adapting it for Max and also serve as showrunner. The book was published in September 2023.

The official description for the series states that it “centers on a brilliant, tough, and darkly funny defense attorney in the Hamptons. Up to this point, Jane has only cared about winning; however, her world is completely turned upside down when, on the eve of the biggest case of her career, she is diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. While the investigation becomes more dangerous and deeply personal, Jane refuses to let her death sentence stop her from solving this case.”

Similar to many other James Patterson projects, 12 Months to Live is also part of a series. The series is titled Jane Smith, and is set to receive its sequel on July 29. That means, if successful, the upcoming Max project could turn into a multiple-season series.

Renée Zellweger Will Reprise Her Role as Bridget Jones

Earlier this year, Universal Pictures officially announced Bridget Jones 4 is in development. The sequel to 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby, the new film will follow the third book in Helen Fielding’s book series, Mad About the Boy. The book takes place before the events in the third film and follows Bridget in her early fifties.

The sequel will feature a star-studded cast, aside from Zellweger and main actor Hugh Grant, reprising his role as Daniel Cleaver, and Emma Thompson as Dr. Rawlings. The newcomers include Doctor Strange‘s Chiwetel Ejiofor, The White Lotus‘ Leo Woodall, and Now You See Me‘s Isla Fisher. Nico Parker (The Last of Us), Josette Simon (Anatomy of a Scandal), and Leila Farzad (I Hate Suzie) will round up the cast.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is set for release on Valentine’s Day 2025 in theaters and on Peacock, while Jane Smith doesn’t have an official release date.
