After the big, tear-inducing splash made by One Day on its Netflix release earlier this month, fans of David Nicholls’ fiction will be excited to learn of a new novel arriving hot on the heels of the drama. You Are Here is published by Sceptre and out on 23 April.
You are Here is a comic novel which sees Nicholls deliver a love story between two people either side of 40, leaving behind the tumultuous twenty-something subjects of One Day.
You Are Here follows Michael Bradshaw, a Geography teacher, who is in a chaotic moment after separating from his wife Natasha. Bradshaw decides to walk the famous coast to coast path (devised by Alfred Wainwright) crossing through the Lake District and the Pennines. His colleague, Cleo, who pities Bradshaw in his moment of confusion decides to turn his solo walk into a party. She invites a range of people to join, including a potential match for Michael.
Marnie Wash, a copy editor from London, is the other main character in the book. She is brought along on the walk, but not as a match for Michael. Marnie is a wry, urbane woman who has also been through a failed marriage. She initially finds herself attracted to a man called Conrad on the walk but Michael is everpresent as a figure of warmth if not romantic interest.
