NSW Premier’s Literary Awards 2024 winners announced

The winners of the 2024 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards were announced on 20 May.

Ali Cobby Eckermann’s verse novel She Is the Earth won the overall $10,000 Book of the Year award, as well as the $30,000 Indigenous Writers’ Prize.

The winning titles in each category are:

Book of the Year ($10,000)

  • She Is the Earth (Ali Cobby Eckermann, Magabala)

Christina Stead Prize for Fiction ($40,000)

  • The Sitter (Angela O’Keeffe, UQP)

Douglas Stewart Prize for Nonfiction ($40,000)

  • Ghosts of the Orphanage: A story of mysterious deaths, a conspiracy of silence, and a search for justice (Christine Kenneally, Hachette)

Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry ($30,000)

  • Riverbed Sky Songs (Tais Rose Wae, Vagabond Press)

Patricia Wrightson Prize for Children’s Literature ($30,000)

  • Paradise Sands: A story of enchantment (Levi Pinfold, Walker Studio)

Ethel Turner Prize for Young People’s Literature ($30,000)

  • The Quiet and the Loud (Helena Fox, Pan)

Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting ($30,000)

  • Sex Magick (Nicholas Brown, Griffin Theatre Company & Currency Press)

Betty Roland Prize for Scriptwriting ($30,000)

  • Safe Home, Episode 1 (Anna Barnes, Kindling Pictures)

Indigenous Writers’ Prize ($30,000)

  • She Is the Earth (Ali Cobby Eckermann, Magabala)

Multicultural NSW Award ($30,000)

  • Stay for Dinner (Sandhya Parappukkaran, illus Michelle Pereira, Bright Light)

Glenda Adams Award for New Writing ($10,000)

  • Anam (André Dao, Hamish Hamilton)

People’s Choice Award ($5,000)

  • The God of No Good (Sita Walker, Ultimo).

The winners, chosen from shortlists released earlier this month, were announced last night at the State Library of NSW. This year the awards received 834 entries across the 12 prize categories.
