Plans ahead for Manx literary festival

The vision includes bringing successful artists to the island as well as promoting the work of Manx writers

A annual Manx literary festival could become a reality if enough people get behind the idea.

A local group has joined the world of blogging, Facebook and Twitter to gauge how much support the idea can generate.

One of the people behind the plans for the festival is Isle of Man author and publisher, John Quirk.

He said: “There are so many factors to consider, the most important – at least initially – is simple: Is there the interest within the island?”

“If there’s not, then there’s really little point in taking this any further. If there is, then we need to look at what size the festival should be pitched at.”

Festival structure

Initial thoughts indicate the festival could be held over five days and include a variety of author talks, Q&A panels, workshops, book launches and signings.

The festival could showcase the very best in Manx writing

As the festival becomes more established it’s hoped the event could bring many visitors and writers to the island as well as providing literary entertainment for book-loving locals.

John Quirk added: “We can’t expect to attract the likes of JK Rowling, Ian Rankin and Terry Pratchett. It would be lovely to do so – just one of those would be very cool.

“But there are plenty of other popular writers out there who might be persuaded to help get a new festival on the map.

Festival funding

The overall vision for the festival includes bringing exciting artists to the island but also promoting Manx writers as well.

One of the questions being looked at currently is that of funding.

It’s thought there could be some support available from the IOM Arts Council, but the costs involved would also mean attracting corporate sponsorship either as headline sponsors or as a series of smaller packages for different events.
