Acclaimed author Sally Rooney is set to release her much-anticipated fourth novel, ‘Intermezzo,’ this fall. The cover of the book was recently revealed in an edition of ‘People Magazine’ where she talked about the ‘emotional complexities’ of the new story and what it took out of her.

Born in 1991, Sally Rooney is a young novelist from Ireland who rose to fame after taking BookTok by storm. Her first novel, ‘Conversations with Friends’ in 2017, already had many qualifying markers of what has now become her signature style: sharp dialogue, emotionally complex characters, and an earnest and vulnerable exploration of modern relationships among young adults.

Following the success of ‘Conversations with Friends,’ Rooney’s next novel, ‘Normal People‘ (2018), solidified her reputation and style. The story of Marianne and Connell, two teenagers from different social circles whose intense connection unfolds over several years, resonated deeply with readers. ‘Normal People’ earned a Booker Prize nomination and was adapted into a critically acclaimed Hulu series in 2020, further propelling Rooney into the spotlight.

What is ‘Intermezzo’ About?

Following the critical success of ‘Normal People’ and ‘Conversations with Friends,’ ‘Intermezzo’ delves into the lives of two brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek. The siblings, described as opposites, are forced to confront their grief and navigate complex emotions after the loss of their father.

Peter, a successful lawyer in his thirties, grapples with self-medication and the challenges of managing his relationships with two women. Meanwhile, the socially awkward Ivan, a 22-year-old competitive chess player, is captivated by an older woman with a mysterious past.

Salley Rooney said that she hoped readers would connect with the story, which is a journey through “desire, despair and possibility” as both brothers grapple with loss and the complexities of life. Her publisher describes ‘Intermezzo’ as a profound exploration of human emotions and ethical complexity, which may be a step away from her usual writing but a step in the right direction for sure.

Praised for her nuanced portrayal of relationships and social dynamics in contemporary Ireland, Rooney has garnered a dedicated following. Another nickname she has been referred to as is the ‘Salinger for the Snapchat generation,’ with the way she has captured the zeitgeist with her previous novels, all of which have been adapted into successful television shows. ‘Intermezzo’ itself is scheduled to hit bookstores on September 24, 2024, and is currently available for pre-order.
