Will Fallout Season 2 Be An Anthology Like The Games? Showrunners Give Intriguing Response

Summary

  • Fallout
showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner comment on whether a potential season 2 will take an anthology approach.
  • Season 1 made a critical decision to create an original story and characters rather than adapting one of the existing video game stories.
  • Fallout
season 2 has not yet been confirmed.

Fallout showrunners respond to whether season 2 will be an anthology. Set in the world of the popular video games of the same name, the upcoming Prime Video series was produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner serving as showrunners and creators. Fallout features a leading cast including Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, Moises Arias, Johnny Pemberton, and Kyle MacLachlan. It is set for release on April 11 on Prime Video.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Wagner and Robertson-Dworet shared whether season 2 would be a separate, anthology-like plot. Neither showrunner offered a definitive answer to whether a potential season 2 would take an anthology approach, as in the case of the games. Robertson-Dworet asserted that she would want to “do a new location” to capture the game’s value of introducing players to a new world. They also spoke about the challenge of adapting such a long-standing and beloved video game. Check out the full quotes below:

Geneva Robertson-Dworet
: This is a spicy one. It’s a bit of a minefield. I think that to me, the most important thing would be that we do a new location because I just love that each game introduces you to a new world and you encounter different factions as part of going to a new place. But we are very attached to our characters, so it’s-

Graham Wagner
: Yeah, you could say that throughout the games there is a commonality in the character, and it’s you, the player. That sucks. That answers so lame. In text that’ll seem so earnest. I apologize. No, but it’s true.

Screen Rant
: No, you’re good.

Graham Wagner
: There is some continuity there. It’s the player.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet
: The main thing we’ll say about a potential season two is we pray we get one because there’s so much that we didn’t get to do in this season.

Graham Wagner
: Yeah, yeah.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet
: The hardest thing about adapting a brilliant game like Fallout where there’s 25 years of great ideas to pull from is-

Graham Wagner
: Yeah.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet
: … just how do you pick what you’re going to put in eight hours when there’s thousands of hours of gameplay? At first, it’s thrilling and then you’re just kind of upset about all the things that you’re not able to put in. So we’re praying for a second season.

Fallout Season 1’s Biggest Decision Opens Doors for Season 2

The Fallout Show Will Feature An Original Plot Not Already Established In The Games.

Season 2’s chances, however, will hinge on the success of the upcoming season 1 in terms of reception and viewership.

As of writing, Fallout season 2 has not yet been confirmed. Given the popularity of the games and the success of fellow video game adaptations such as The Last of Us, the series will likely do well when it hits Prime Video next week. It also will not have a paucity of content on which to base itself for a sophomore effort. Season 2’s chances, however, will hinge on the success of the upcoming season 1 in terms of reception and viewership.

The Fallout show is set in a post-apocalyptic version of the United States. Although the main action takes place 219 years later, the past is crucial.

In adapting the video game series, the creative team made a critical decision to develop an original story. The main characters are original to the Prime Video show, while they are centered around Purnell’s Lucy. These characters will navigate some familiar elements of the Fallout game universe, including the Brotherhood of Steel, but will overall follow an original plot. Fallout will also share a universe with the games but still explore a different city not already established in the lore.

Adapting Fallout to honor the games while adding a separate story opens the door for season 2. This gives the showrunners and writers a choice to either follow Lucy’s narrative through another season or reinvent itself with a new cast in season 2. Secondly, it increases the chances that the Prime Video show will appear to a wider audience beyond just lovers of the games. Hopefully, Robertson-Dworet and Wagner will be able to fulfill their visions in a future season of Fallout.

Fallout

Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Fallout is a drama series set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. The series follows the survivors of the human race in an alternate 1950s timeline, where nuclear war laid waste to the Earth, spawning large irradiated areas and mutated humans who now roam the planet.
