Poetry anthology from retired priest addresses sacred and secular

A retired priest in our diocese has written an anthology of poetry.

The anthology, entitled ‘Plainsong’, contains 80 poems on a variety of subjects, sacred and secular, and has been written by the Revd Trevor Vaughan.

Ordained in Coventry Cathedral in 1969, Revd Trevor has worked as a full-time priest in the Dioceses of Coventry, Blackburn and Bradford.

With his wife Ann they retired in 2006 to Ripon, where he has continued to exercise a locum ministry to many rural parishes around the city.

After being widowed, Revd Trevor served for three years as priest in charge of St Michael & All Angels, Littlethorpe, a chapel-of-ease to Ripon Cathedral.

He trained at Lincoln Theological College, from where he served two curacies in Coventry and Stratford-upon-Avon and became priest-in-charge of eight rural parishes around Rugby.

He and his family moved back to the North West, taking up appointments in both Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Revd Trevor has a degree in Linguistics and was Regimental Chaplain to the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry for twenty years, for which he was awarded the Territorial Decoration.

He was cartoonist for the Blackburn Diocesan magazine and appeared on ‘Look North’ with his cartoons

He has written an autobiography, ‘Nowt’ in 2010; ‘Parson’s Pie’ in 2012, an exploration of ‘church words’; and in 2016, ‘Omilettes’, a collection of sermons preached during his time at St Michael’s.

Though he has dabbled in poetry since a boy, this anthology is his first serious endeavour.

He has had several poems published in national magazines ‘This England’ and ‘Evergreen’, as well as in ‘Northern Life’.

Apart from his pastoral care of human flocks in numerous parishes, Revd Trevor also shepherded his woolly variety of Swaledale sheep in the Ribble Valley.

An ardent Burnley supporter for 75 years, he is a season ticket-holder and still makes the journey over Blubberhouses for home matches.
