RHINELANDER – A School District of Rhinelander student writer has received an international award at the International General Federation of Women’s Clubs Writing contest, held recently in Louisville, Ky.

Riley Jae Johnson’s story was among approximately 45 entered in the local Woman’s GFWC contest in February. It was chosen as the first place winner and sent to the state level contest, where it was again chosen as the first place winner and sent to the International contest, again placing first.

Her story was written as part of the assignment during an eighth grade narrative writing unit. Students were to research a Latin American monster that does not appear in the novel, “Summer of the Mariposas,” and then incorporate that monster in an additional chapter to the book. Riley Jae’s story focused on the Duende, which eats the toes of naughty children.

Johnson was recognized at a recent School District of Rhinelander Board of Education meeting, along with her teachers.
