Brent Knoll pupils welcome Cat In The Hat after winning writing contest

Pupils at Brent Knoll Primary School got to meet a popular children’s book character this week after winning a national writing competition.

It comes after Dr Seuss Class from Brent Knoll Primary entered a national story writing competition run by the publishers Harper Collins earlier this year to celebrate the 60th birthday of The Cat in the Hat.

“We planned the story as a class and then worked in groups to write a paragraph each,” the school’s Jenny Deacon told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“Our story, ‘Silly School Day’, told how Pansy Pinecone learned not to be afraid of people just because they look different. We submitted our entry online and then crossed our fingers and waited.”

“At the end of May we received an email with the most fantastic news that we had won the competition and this week The Cat in the Hat came to Brent Knoll Primary School!”

“The afternoon began with a visit from Liz, a storyteller who retold the story of The Cat in the Hat.”

“All the children in Dr Seuss Class joined in with actions and sound effects and some children even got to become the main characters in the story.”

“They did an amazing job as Sally, her brother, The Cat himself, Thing 1 and Thing 2 and even the cleaning up machine!”

“After the story, The Cat in the Hat appeared and Liz told him our Silly School Day story.”

“We all had our photos taken with The Cat in the Hat and even got to ask him some questions. Our final prize from Harper Collins was for every child to take home a special 60th Birthday version of The Cat in the Hat story.”

“We all really enjoyed the storytelling session and the visit from The Cat in the Hat and we couldn’t be more proud to have won the competition.”
