Questlove Reflects on Hip-Hop’s Legacy at BAM Event

Questlove will be in conversation with Marc Lamont Hill around his new book that details a 50-year history of hip-hop.

For Grammy Award-winning percussionist and musician, Questlove, hip-hop has always been more than just music. Growing up in Philadelphia, the young Black artist immersed himself in the vibrant sounds of the genre, staying up late to catch new releases on the radio, saving up for the latest vinyl, and even trying his hand at creating his own tracks.

This early passion laid the foundation for an illustrious career that now includes six Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for filmmaking, a New York Times bestseller, and a pivotal role in the iconic hip-hop group, The Roots.

Questlove’s deep connection to hip-hop and its cultural significance is the focus of his new book, “Hip-Hop is History.” The book, his first to be published under his own AUWA Books imprint, showcases his extensive knowledge, fervent enthusiasm, and unique perspective as an industry insider. It delves into how hip-hop has evolved into a global cultural phenomenon, blending scholarly insight with a fan’s passion and an insider’s access.

To celebrate the release, Questlove will engage in an exclusive one-night-only conversation with scholar, author, and television personality Marc Lamont Hill at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). The event, entitled, “HIP-HOP IS HISTORY: Questlove in Conversation with Marc Lamont Hill on a 50 Year History of Hip-Hop,” promises to be a deep dive into the stories and historical context that have shaped hip-hop’s journey from its roots to its present-day influence.

Questlove’s journey from a music-loving kid in Philadelphia to a multifaceted cultural icon is a testament to hip-hop’s transformative power. His new book not only reflects his personal journey but also illuminates the broader narrative of a genre that continues to shape and reflect societal changes.

For fans and scholars alike, the BAM event is a unique opportunity to hear Questlove’s insights and stories, offering a richer understanding of hip-hop’s enduring legacy and its role in shaping contemporary culture.
