New Orleans Public Library Publishes New Book Featuring Local Writer

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The New Orleans Public Library is pleased to announce their first book publication, an anthology titled “Renewed” featuring local writers who entered the library’s 2023 Summer Fun Adult Writing Contest.

Each of the book’s 10 short stories and 10 poems were finalists in the contest and the library plans to publish a new collection every year. Librarians Rachel Bailey and Shelby Goddard oversee adult programming at the library, including the writing contest and the anthology’s publication.

“This book marks a huge milestone for the library,” said Bailey. “We’re so excited we were able to create something lasting for our writers, our community, and our collection. As an annual publication showcasing the talents of New Orleans Writers, “Renewed” will help us preserve and celebrate the rich and diverse culture of our city.”

In her role at the library, Goddard works closely with the local writing community and is proud this project will introduce their voices into the library’s permanent collection.

“I love coordinating our creative writing programs and I think it’s wonderful we were able to find a tangible way to show our appreciation for the work that they do,” said Goddard. “I hope our writers feel seen, heard, and valued and that the publication of this book encourages more people to put their work out into the world.”

The Friends of the New Orleans Public Library helped sponsor this project, which executive director Shannan Cvitanovic said amplifies and encourages local voices and stories. The Friends are also sponsoring a book release party to celebrate the book’s publication on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Main Library (219 Loyola Ave.) from 2-4 p.m.

“I can’t think of a better place than the library for supporting both creative talent and for creating community, which is, in essence, what the “Renewed” project does,” said Cvitanovic. “I think we have an image of writers working in solitude, but we all need community, too. This event gives creative people an opportunity to share their work and to be inspired by others. Publishing this book is a cause for celebration, and I am proud to have the Friends support it.”

The event will include readings, refreshments, music, giveaway books, and more. Visit nolalibrary.co/renewed-launch for details.
