Upcoming forum will discuss ideas for Ridgewood Library’s future

The Ridgewood Public Library.

It is hard to believe that it has been 20 years since a boldly ambitious capital campaign gave us the current Ridgewood Library. So much has happened over these 20 years in the world of libraries. The advent of Google, electronic readers, and smart phones signaled, to many, the demise of public libraries. Many asked what purpose libraries would serve. Despite the disruption, public libraries remain centers of learning and continue to thrive by offering ever-expanding services that include books and so much more in response to the unique community needs. Few finer examples of libraries for the twenty-first century exist than the Ridgewood Public Library, as is evidenced by the community’s response to a myriad of programs crafted for every demographic and interest group in our village.

With more than 6 million visitors in 20 years, the library is in need of a facelift. I urge the community to consider more than paint, carpeting and furniture. Our current design does not suit current need. Library staff and trustees for several years have researched and visited redesigned libraries and worked with professionals to reimagine the Ridgewood Public Library.

The possibility of partial funding by the State of New Jersey through its $125 million NJ Library Construction Bond Act encourages quick action. A preliminary plan will be presented on Sept. 26 to the Village Council and on Oct. 6, the library will host a public forum. Come, share your ideas and play a part in “reimagining” the Ridgewood Library.
