The Duke of Northumberland has written a new book which is set to kick off a series of literary events at his home of Alnwick Castle this year.
Lions of the Red Rose explores the history of the Wars of the Roses with a focus on members of the Percy Family. These are the second Earl of Northumberland, his four warrior sons, and their surviving heir, battling through some of the most brutal and violent decades of British history.
The book is illustrated by Peter Phillips and includes images of surviving documents from the Alnwick Castle archive. To coincide wit the publication of his book, the Duke will deliver a talk about his family’s involvement with the story on April 25, kicking off a season of literary events at the castle – the second largest inhabited castle in the UK after Windsor.
Attendees will gain out of hours access to the castle’s new exhibition, also named Lions of the Red Rose. A proportion of ticket sales from the Duke’s book talk will be donated to the Battlefields Trust, whose work helps preserve many of the sites described within the book.
