BEREA, Ohio (WOIO) – A letter from the Berea-Midpark High School principal says the school will be reworking its current library space to make room for a more collaborative learning space.
In a letter from Mark Smithberger, the principal says the library will be redistributing the books in its system and making more space in the media center for new furniture and more seating.
The letter says this decision came after the school observed a, “significant shift in how our students access and use resources for learning and leisure reading.”
“Data from the last 30 months reveals that book circulation has averaged only 2.29 checkouts per day, with the majority of these checkouts being classroom sets for specific assignments,” the letter says.
The school says it will redistribute the books currently in circulation at the library, and keep the popular titles in the media center for easy access.
Books not staying in the library will be moved to other media centers within the district or teachers’ classroom libraries, according to the letter.
Smithberger added that any remaining books will potentially be sold or donated to the Cuyahoga County Public Library System.
“I want to reassure you that these changes are not diminishing the importance of reading but are adapting to the evolving needs of students and making the best use of our available space and resources,” Smithberger wrote.
