This Is Us star’s anthology show gets first trailer

The first trailer for season two of the anthology series Dr Death, starring This Is Us actress Mandy Moore, is here.

Also featuring American Crime Story‘s Édgar Ramírez, the upcoming season is based on a Wondery podcast episode titled ‘Miracle Man’ and tells the real-life story of Paolo Macchiarini.

Macchiarini (played by Ramírez) is known for his work as a thoracic surgeon, and, eager to write about his career, investigative journalist Benita Alexander (Moore) approaches him about a story.

Describing Paolo as “a charming surgeon”, an official synopsis for the series reveals that Benita’s life will be forever changed after she becomes involved with him and the “lines between personal and professional” begin to blur.

In the tense trailer, Paolo is seen presenting a 3D-printed trachea to scientists. “The work I do, this could change the world,” Paolo says, as clips of him operating flash on screen.

“Your patients, they really trust you,” Benita observes in another clip as she begins interviewing him.

However, things later become complicated when the journalist develops a personal relationship with Paolo and those around Paolo begin to question his practices.

“He’s experimenting on people,” says one of the scientists looking into Paolo’s work as the complications of his operations become apparent.

“As she learns how far Paolo will go to protect his secrets, a group of doctors halfway across the world make shocking discoveries of their own that call everything about Paolo into question,” the synopsis teases.

Jennifer Morrison and Laura Belsey directed the episodes, which follow on from the Joshua Jackson-led first season, while Ashley Michel Hoban served as showrunner, writer and executive producer.

Luke Kirby, Ashley Madekwe and Gustaf Hammarsten also star alongside Moore and Ramírez.

Dr Death season 2 will begin streaming on December 21 on Peacock in the US.
