Museum to host summer book club for young readers | News

BRISTOL — The Elkhart County Historical Museum is introducing a new summer reading club geared toward elementary and middle school-aged children.

The club will meet once per month at the Elkhart County Historical Museum to discuss stories that are set in museums, a news release stated. The program is free to attend, and two copies of that month’s featured book will be given away in a drawing at each meeting.

The first meeting will take place June 13, at 10:30 a.m. June’s featured book is Milo’s Museum, a picture book written by Zetta Elliott and illustrated by Purple Wong.

“In the story, Milo is excited about her class trip to the museum,” the release stated. “But during her tour, she notices that people from her community are missing from the museum’s collections. Milo then takes matters into her own hands to find a solution.”

The program will include a read-aloud of the story, short group discussion, and a small group activity. The suggested age range for the program is 5-10.

Participants will be encouraged to discover more about themselves, their communities, and museums at each meeting. This program is presented in conjunction with the Museum’s current exhibit, Clues Through the Lens, which uses the Museum’s image collection to invite visitors to be their own history detectives.

The Elkhart County Historical Museum is part of the Elkhart County Parks Department. To learn more about the upcoming book clubs, visit elkhartcountyparks.org/events or follow the museum’s Facebook page.
