Black Owned Media Weekend; Chef Elle Simone Scott’s new book and more

Black Owned Media Weekend returns

Detroit is hosting the third annual Black Owned Media Weekend this Thursday through Sunday, June 6-9.

Black media owners and professionals will have opportunities to make connections, mix and mingle while exploring how to build and sustain media companies and relationships with top tier advertisers. Keynote speakers this year will include Debra Lee, founder of Leading Women Defined and co-founder of The Monarchs Collective; and Michele Thornton Ghee, founder and CEO of Expectant Media.

The conference will be held at The Beacon, 1 Woodward Ave., #200, Detroit. For more information or to register online visit blackownedmediaweekend.org. 

Chef Elle Simone Scott at Detroit Food Commons

Detroit native, chef and food stylist Elle Simone Scott will sit down with Detroit Free Press restaurant and dining critic Lindsay Green on Thursday to discuss her new book, “Food Gifts.”

The on-screen test cook and executive editor for PBS’ America’s Test Kitchen will share details about the book, including its more than 150 recipes for “Crafting Personalized Presents,” at 6:30 p.m. at the Detroit Food Commons, 8324 Woodward Ave., Detroit. The Detroit Food Commons encompasses the Detroit People’s Food Co-op and the offices, event spaces and community kitchens above it. 

Tickets are $31.80 and can be purchased through eventbrite.com. A copy of Scott’s new cookbook is included with admission.

Michigan Women Forward honors local nonprofit leader

Michigan Women Forward hosted its annual WomenUp & Celebrate – Southeast Michigan awards Tuesday night. Among the women who were honored was Faye Nelson, former Michigan director of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, where she led the foundation’s statewide work to improve health equity and equity in early education systems for children. 

Nelson retired from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation this year. She previously served as the University of Michigan’s Sojourner Truth Fellow; DTE Energy’s vice president; DTE Energy Foundation’s president and board chair; and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s president and CEO.

Gardner-White CEO Rachel Tronstein Stewart was also honored at the event.

‘Dine & Dance’ at the Kemeny Rec Center

The Kemeny Recreation Center in Detroit will host its annual Mom & Pop Dine & Dance from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 7. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Call 313-628-2819 to register and for more information. Doors open at 5:30. The Kemeny Recreation Center is located at 2260 S Fort St.

Lexus Velodrome Summer Cycling Camp

Detroit’s Lexus Velodrome is gearing up for its annual Learn to Ride a Bike Summer Cycling Camps.

Children 3 to 17 can choose to attend one of six weeks of camps. The Velodrome offers morning sessions for little kids and afternoon sessions for big kids, Wednesday through Friday. The Velodrome also offers free bike riding time to kids on Saturdays and after school. Bikes and helmets are provided.

Detroit Retirees Task Force meets

The Detroit Retirees Task Force will meet this Friday in person and online. The meeting runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the 13th Floor Auditorium at the Coleman A Young Municipal Center.

The goal of the task force is to explore and address the needs of city of Detroit retirees and provide recommendations to the Duggan Administration and City Council on available methods to address those needs.
