Book Review: The Christo Interviews

“The Christo Interviews” combines a compelling collection of dialogues between the renowned environmental artist Christo and the distinguished curator and contemporary art commentator Hans Ulrich Obrist. From December 2012 to May 2020, these conversations provide an in-depth exploration into the minds of two of the art world’s most influential figures.

Best known for his large-scale, site-specific installations created in collaboration with his wife and artistic partner Jeanne-Claude, Christo’s insights in these interviews shed light on the creative processes and philosophies that underpinned their monumental works. Obrist, known for his extensive work in contemporary art and his role as the artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London, describes these sessions as “werksttat interviews,” likening them to a “workshop or laboratory of words.” Through these dialogues, readers can trace the evolution of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s partnership and their significant contributions to the art world.

One of the book’s highlights is the detailed account of the creation and execution of The London Mastaba on Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park (2016-18), Christo’s first major public outdoor work in the UK. This project, which coincided with an exhibition at the Serpentine Galleries, is contextualized within the duo’s six-decade-long history of working with oil barrels. The interviews reveal the meticulous planning and conceptual development behind this impressive installation.

Fully illustrated with images of completed works, preparatory drawings, and documentary photographs, the book provides a visual journey through Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s illustrious career and includes previously unpublished material. The final conversation captured in the book holds particular significance, as it was Christo’s last interview before his passing in May 2020, adding a poignant closure to the collection.

Hans Ulrich Obrist’s role as an interviewer brings out the depth of Christo’s thoughts on art, life, and the collaborative nature of his projects. Obrist’s expertise and curiosity make for an engaging read that offers art lovers and casual readers a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs that marked Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s artistic journey.

Christo’s background, from his early studies under the Communist regime in Bulgaria to his eventual escape to the West and his lifelong partnership with Jeanne-Claude, is thoughtfully recounted, providing context to the profound dedication and vision that characterized his work. The couple’s move to New York in 1964 marked the beginning of a series of groundbreaking public art projects that challenged conventional notions of art and space.

“The Christo Interviews” is a richly illustrated hardback that captures the essence of Christo’s artistic legacy through candid conversations and personal reflections. It is a testament to the enduring impact of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work and their unwavering commitment to transforming the public’s perception of art. This book is a must-read for those interested in contemporary art and the stories behind some of the most iconic art installations of the 20th and 21st centuries.
