Duncan Ferguson promises ‘brutal honesty’ and ‘mischief’ as Everton hero confirms new book

Everton hero Duncan Ferguson is set to release an autobiography chronicling his eventful and controversial career in football. The book, called ‘BIG DUNC: The Upfront Autobiography’ will be released on May 8, 2025.

The former centre-forward had two spells with the Blues, in which he made 263 appearances and scored 69 goals in total. Ferguson, who is currently the manager of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, became a huge favourite with Everton supporters after joining from Rangers in 1994, helping save the club from relegation and then playing a key role in the FA Cup success in 1995.

The Scotland international was a magnet for controversy though and crafted a ‘hard man’ image throughout his days as a player. He was sent off nine times in total in his career and served a three-month prison sentence in 1994 for a headbutt on John McStay of Raith Rovers.

Ferguson has also had two temporary spells as the Everton manager. The first saw him steer the team to a memorable 3-1 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park, as well as draws with Arsenal, Manchester United and Leicester City. The second lasted just one game, a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.

“I’ve been thinking about writing this book for over 20 years,” said Ferguson. “Now is finally the right time. Anyone who knows me, knows that I tell things straight. So this book is going to be real. I’ve been brutally honest, about the good and the hard times.

“I’ve got up to quite a bit of mischief, and I think readers will enjoy the colourful stories – there’s enough of them! I can’t wait for the book to be published, and to share it with readers up and down the UK next year.”

The book will be written alongside Henry Winter- the current Football Journalist of the Year for both the Sports Journalists’ Association and the Football Supporters’ Association – and Brian Doogan, a bestselling author who used to work at Everton.
