Expected Release Window, Story, & Everything We Know

Summary

  • Andrzej Sapkowski is writing a new The Witcher book, set for release in Poland in 2024, with a global debut expected in early 2025.
  • The upcoming book will focus on Geralt in a standalone story, following Sapkowski’s previous vow to not continue the series beyond its conclusion.
  • There are hints that the new book may tie into Netflix’s upcoming animated movie, Sirens of the Deep, based on a short story from Sword of Destiny.

A brand new The Witcher book is on the way from author Andrzej Sapkowski, and there have already been a few updates about what this story might cover and when. Sapkowski’s book series has evolved into so much more over the years, expanding into a video game franchise and a variety of TV shows and movies on Netflix. This seems to have inspired the author to pen more stories following Geralt and his companions, which is excellent news for those who have fallen in love with all this fantasy world has to offer.

The Witcher book series got its start with Sword of Destiny, which was a collection of short stories following Geralt, released in Poland in 1992. From there, the series exploded, with The Last Wish, the book on which Netflix’s The Witcher season 1 is based, arriving in 1993. Sapkowski’s central story concluded with The Lady of the Lake in 1999, and Geralt was given a fairly definitive ending. However, the author released Season of Storms in 2013, a standalone spinoff set earlier within the chronology. Now, it seems that Sapkowski will again do something similar with a ninth The Witcher book.

Andrzej Sapkowski Has Confirmed He’s Writing A Ninth Witcher Book

The Witcher Author Announced A New Book Was In The Works In 2023

Sapkowski announced on a live stream interview in August 2023 that he was diligently working on another The Witcher book, the first to be released in over a decade. In an English translation of the interview (via Redanian Intelligence), the author noted that he doesn’t like to announce a book until it is nearly finished, just in case the project falls through. Therefore, Sapkowski’s willingness to divulge his progress on a ninth The Witcher book is pretty great news.

Sapkowski has made quick work on his promise for a new The Witcher book and has since announced at the Comic Con Vienna that the upcoming installment will debut in Poland near the end of 2024. From there, the book must be translated for its worldwide release, which should arrive sometime in the following year. So, if all goes well, US fans will be reading the newest The Witcher in early 2025.

The New Witcher Book Will Be A Standalone Story Focused On Geralt

Naturally, the biggest question after when the new The Witcher will be released is what the story will be about. Geralt’s tale came to a definitive end in The Lady of the Lake, and Sapkowski has been adamant that he has no intention of continuing the story past where he left it. At the 2018 Polish Comic-Con, the author said, “The story is complete, the saga has been concluded, so if by any chance I write something in The Witcher universe, and I sure have such intention, it would probably be something like a prequel or a sidequel. Not a sequel.”

Now that Sapkowski has followed through on his stated intention of writing another The Witcher book, it’s safe to assume that he will also stand by his promise to leave Geralt’s story where it ended. However, the author has teased that this new story will still be about Geralt, jokingly stating that Netflix “forced” him to continue the tale after adapting one of his short stories. He is likely referring to the upcoming animated Witcher movie, Sirens of the Deep, which means Sapkowski’s new novel could follow up the short story A Little Sacrifice.

is expected to be released on Netflix near the end of 2024.

Could The New Witcher Book Tie Into Netflix’s Animated Movie Sirens Of The Deep

Andrzej Sapkowski Has Hinted That His New Book Connects To Netflix’s Newest Adaptation

Netflix’s upcoming animated movie The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is expected to release on the streaming platform near the end of 2024. The film is based on the short story A Little Sacrifice, which is found in Sapkowski’s first The Witcher book, Sword of Destiny. The story follows Geralt as he is hired to settle a dispute between merpeople and a coastal village and introduces a bard character named Essi Daven, who falls madly in love with the titular witcher.

Sapkowski’s comments about Netflix’s adaptation seem to imply that his upcoming The Witcher book will somehow be connected to this short story.

Sapkowski’s comments about Netflix’s adaptation seem to imply that his upcoming The Witcher book will somehow be connected to this short story. Perhaps the streaming giant and author have a plan for a continued film series, and the upcoming book could serve as the foundation for Sirens of the Deep‘s eventual sequel. Overall, as a sort of anthology, Sapkowski has unlimited options for a standalone The Witcher book. Of course, connecting with other media within the franchise could have exciting benefits—time will tell.
