J.M. DeMatteis Returns to the ‘DeMultiverse’ With Five New Releases

Back in 2022, legendary comic book writer J.M. DeMatteis launched a new line of comic books through Spellbound Comics dubbed “The DeMultiverse” by virtue of all four titles being written and co-created by the longtime comic book writer. Well, after the series had a successful crowdfunding, DeMatteis is back for more with a new crowd-funding project for the SECOND issues of the DeMultiverse, plus one brand-new title on top of the four original series that are returning for their second issues.

DeMatteis told CBR about the project (which has already hit its initial funding goal with over three weeks to go), “It was exciting when we launched the first round of DeMultiverse titles, but I knew then that these were essentially pilot issues and there’s just so much of a new universe you can communicate in one introductory story. With these second issues, we’re building up and out from those foundations and the scope of the stories, the vastness of the worlds, starts to really become visible.”

J.M. DeMatteis Introduces Fans to Four New Creator-Owned Series

In an interview with CBR, legendary comics writer J.M. DeMatteis unveils his new creator-owned line of comics, The DeMultiverse.

What comic book titles are in the “DeMultiverse?”

Again, four of these titles had their first issues released in the first phase of the DeMultiverse, and now they’re back for second issues, along with special variant covers by some famous comic book artists that are add-ons for the Kickstarter. The four returning titles are:

  • Anyman, co-created by DeMatteis and David Baldeon, an offbeat superhero tale. The Boys co-creator Darick Robertson drew the special variant cover for this one.
  • Godsend, co-created by DeMatteis and Matthre Dow Smith, with Scott Koblish taking over on art duties for the second issue, a cosmic tale along the lines of Jack Kirby’s The Fourth World Saga. Co-creator Dow Smith returns to the project to do the special variant cover.
  • Layla in the Lands of After, co-created by DeMatteis and Shawn McManus, is an all-ages fantasy adventure. Marguerite Sauvage drew the special variant cover.
  • Wisdom, co-created by DeMatteis and Tom Mandrak, a supernatural western series. Patrick Zircher did the special variant cover

Plus there is one brand-new title joining the DeMultiverse this time around, and it is a supernatural mystery series dubbed The Edward Gloom Mysteries, co-created (and drawn) by Vasillis Gogtzilas

After The Lost Hunt and Ben Reilly: Spider-Man, fans are eager for writer J.M. DeMatteis to dive into other unexplored eras of Marvel’s wall-crawler.

What else does J.M. DeMatteis have to say about the project?

DeMatteis did a video discussing this second phase of The DeMultiverse. However, he also discussed the project with CBR, noting, “It’s one thing to have a story in your head, another to bring it to visual life. That’s why working with this murderer’s row of artistic talent has been so exciting. Each one has a unique voice and visual point of view, and each one adds immeasurably the the tales I’m telling. I feel blessed to have these incredible collaborators. And that includes the superstars who have signed on to do our alternate covers and the cover for our collected edition.

He concluded by explaining, “I’ve been writing professionally for more than 40 years and working on the DeMultiverse is one of the most challenging, and exhilarating, experiences of my career. I hope anyone who’s a fan of my work comes along for the ride.”

All the second issues are available to order in a trade paperback together, and the first issues (and the trade paperback collecting THEM) are also available as add-ons.
