Keith Haring’s Art Pops In New Book

Keith Haring, an iconic figure of the 1980s Pop Art movement, is renowned for his playful pictograms such as “Radiant Baby” and “Barking Dog.” These motifs, often seen alongside boldly outlined dancing figures, flying saucers, gender symbols, angels, crosses, and pyramids, form energetic and colorful scenes. Haring’s work combines deceptive simplicity with vibrant visuals to address important and challenging themes of community, health, religion, politics, and sexuality.

Haring’s love for drawing began in his childhood in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Inspired by midcentury popular culture icons like Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney, he developed his cartooning skills early on. After high school and two semesters in a commercial art program, Haring decided to pursue a different path. He moved to New York City in 1978, enrolling at the School of Visual Arts. There, he immersed himself in the city’s burgeoning alternative art and graffiti scene, thriving in the subways, clubs, and streets.

In New York, Haring befriended and collaborated with art legends like Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf. He experimented with various mediums, including performance, video, installation, and collage. While invigorated by the New York art community, Haring also drew inspiration from past artists like Jean Dubuffet and Pierre Alechinsky. Despite his explorations, drawing remained central to his practice, often appearing on subway advertising panels, walls, billboards, and even amusement parks.
