Malvern illustrator and RNLI team up for personalised childrens’ book

Hannah Lawson’s illustrations will bring the book to life, which has been penned by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Rory Stamp.

This marks the second collaboration between the pair, having previously written ‘The Big Christmas Rescue’ together.

This earlier work reached over 23,000 young readers and scooped the Best Children’s Publication accolade at the 2024 Cultural Enterprises Awards.

Their recent creation, ‘The Big Seaside Rescue’, paints a picture of typical British seaside, including sandcastle building, toy lifeboats and pristine sandy beaches.

The story takes a magical turn when Rudolph the Reindeer, on his summer holiday, encounters peril at sea, leading to RNLI’s beach lifeguards dashing to aid the stricken Rudolph, with the assistance of a very special child.

The story imparts critical water safety advice to teach youngsters how to be safe while enjoying a day at the beach.

Last year, the RNLI responded to 14,213 incidents across the UK and the Channel Islands, saving 86 lives and assisting 19,979 individuals.

Lawson said: “It was wonderful to work with the RNLI again on this book, and especially enormous fun to imagine what Rudolph looks like when he’s on his summer holiday.

“But there’s an important water safety message, too, and one that I hope will be taken to heart by all the readers as they head off to the beach on their own holidays.”

In addition to being an illustrator, Lawson was nominated for the Portsmouth Book Award in 2012 for her book, ‘The Lost Stars’.

She has also authored and illustrated two other books, ‘The Cloud’ and ‘The Red Boat’.

‘The Big Seaside Rescue’ can be purchased online for £20 at shop.RNLI.org/SummerRescue.

The book can also be personalised with a child’s name, gender, and skin tone.

All profits will go to the RNLI.
