CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS NOW) — ‘Historic Bookmarks’ is a new book club associated with the history of Mecklenburg County. For its first-ever book club meeting, they’ll be discussing ‘Poster Girls,’ a book that features a local author and cover model.
That event is on Wednesday, July 10, at the picnic tables outside of That’s Novel Books in Charlotte starting at 6 p.m.
Set in 1943, the book is a historical fiction story about a military wife and mother who works at Shell Assembly Plant, Charlotte’s largest wartime employer. Meanwhile, another military wife from Alabama faces the challenges of a black woman looking for employment under Jim Crow.
The two women strike up an unlikely friendship and work together to unify the plant’s workforce.
Queen City News Now sat down with author Meredith Ritchie and cover model Joy Farley to talk about the inspiration for the book.
