The third Powerless book is still a while off, as the second installment just hit shelves in July 2024. Reckless was one of the most-anticipated fantasy books of the entire year, and judging by its 4.24 average Goodreads rating, it’s a satisfying follow-up to 2023’s Powerless. Clearly, Paedyn and Kai’s story is hooking readers, which makes the wait for the next sequel even more agonizing.

The Powerless Trilogy is set in a world where people have obtained powers from a plague, and those who don’t emerge with abilities are considered dangerous. As the series’ name suggests, The Powerless Trilogy will conclude with the third book, meaning Fearless has plenty of questions to answer and storylines to resolve when it debuts. It’s not impossible that Roberts will return to this world from another perspective; in fact, she’s mentioned a second novella (via Publisher’s Weekly). But Paedyn and Kai’s story will conclude in Fearless, and the finale is both exciting and worrisome after Reckless’ bombshell ending.

Fearless’ Story: What The Ending Of Reckless Set Up

Kitt Will Play A Much Bigger Role In The Final Book

Reckless doesn’t move the plot as far as many readers hoped, even if the banter and interactions between Paedyn and Kai make it a solid sequel. There are a few important developments that will shape the end of The Powerless Trilogy though, the biggest being Reckless’ Kitt twist. When Kai returns Paedyn to the palace, she isn’t executed or locked in the dungeons. Instead, she’s informed she’ll be wed to the new king — a surprising development that suggests readers will see much more of Kitt in the third book.

Kitt’s looming marriage to Paedyn will obviously complicate her dynamic with Kai, and it could drive a wedge between the two brothers. It will also be detrimental to Paedyn, as she associates Kitt with his father, a figure who’s caused much of her trauma. It’s hard to say what Kitt intends to do with this marriage, and it’s possible Calum is pushing it to save Paedyn’s life. But there’s a chance Fearless will turn Kitt into a full-blown villain, with his proximity allowing him to torment Paedyn as much as he wants.

There are also important revelations about the tensions between the Ordinaries and Elites in Reckless. The journal of Paedyn’s father reveals that the king was aware the Ordinaries posed no threat to the Elites. It seems other powerful forces know this truth, which could help the Resistance. Paedyn becoming queen could also aid their efforts, which may be why Calum wants her married to Kitt. Kitt and Kai will likely be on the lookout for any threat of treason, so it’s hard to see how to see how Paedyn or the Resistance will find their way out of their current circumstances.

A Familiar Face Could Return In Fearless

Further details about Fearless are currently sparse, but Reckless obviously sets the stage for an epic conclusion to Roberts’ Powerless Trilogy. Roberts hasn’t said much else about the upcoming sequel, though she did tease that Mak — a character from her novella, Powerful — could make a comeback in Fearless. This was during an interview with Simon Teen, which mostly teased Reckless. Hopefully, as readers approach the third and final book, Roberts will have more to say about Reckless’ ending and what it means for the conclusion of The Powerless Trilogy.
