Prince William signed ‘waiver’ with King Charles over helicopter use, new book says

Prince William “signed a waiver” after clashing with King Charles over the issue of the Prince of Wales flying in a helicopter, according to a new book.

Evening Standard royal correspondent Robert Jobson has made the claim in his biography, Catherine, The Princess of Wales, which will be published on August 1.

The book focuses on Kate and her life to date but contains snippets of how the royal family has handled the stresses of recent events, including the recent cancer diagnoses.

The princess confirmed her cancer diagnosis in March with the King having done the same one month earlier.

Both royals have been slowly resuming duties since the news in recent weeks, with Kate on hand to present the men’s Wimbledon final trophy.

After his own diagnosis, it is written that the King confronted William over his decision to fly in a helicopter around the country with his young family.

It is understood that Charles, conscious of his own mortality, said to his son that he had fears after the 1967 crash that killed the Captain of the Queen’s Flight.

Mr Jobson wrote: “After being diagnosed with cancer, King Charles — perhaps reminded of his own mortality — echoed his late mother’s concerns.

“And when William refused to stop flying with his family, Charles insisted that he sign a formal document, acknowledging the risks involved and taking full responsibility for his actions. It would be scant consolation, of course, for an unspeakable tragedy, let alone for the prospect of King Harry and Queen Meghan…”

The book otherwise charts Kate’s story from being a university student to the Queen in waiting.

The blurb states: “From Robert Jobson – with his extensive connections within the royal household – this revelatory new biography tells the full story of how Catherine, the Princess of Wales, became the woman she is today.”
