Best New Books of May 2024, According To Literary Experts


The sun is out, and we’re here with a hot set of new books to match the glorious weather. Trust: May’s lineup of new literary releases is an absolute treat for book worms everywhere, with everything from heart-pounding thrillers to soul-stirring memoirs for you to get your teeth into.

Coco Mellors delivers a resounding follow up to her smash hit debut Cleopatra and Frankenstein with Blue Sisters, a tale of grief, humour and sisterhood that will keep you reading until the early hours. Elsewhere, legendary writer Colm Tóibín joins the roster of authors releasing new books this month with his long awaited sequel to Brooklyn, while Stephen King publishes a spine tingling collection of short stories. Enlightenment from the award winning Sarah Perry is story of love and astronomy told over the course of twenty years through the lives of two improbable best friends,
and Think Twice from Harlen Coben is perfect if you just binged his Netflix adaptation.

We also want to highlight the translated Bad Habit, a Spanish novel with trans main character that is just gloriously written, and Evenings and Weekends, a passionate and thought provoking quintessentially London story that fizzes and sparks with desire. Oh, Alison Weir returns with yet another Tudor masterpiece, this time focusing on Mary Queen of Scots.

In the non-fiction genre, All That Glitters is a Great Gatsby style depiction of a massive art fraud set in the dizzying wealth of high society reads like propulsive fiction. Olivia Laing is a venerated writer who has written the most immersive and mystical book on escapes though her horticultural adventures in The Garden Against Time which will delight her cult followers.
