The Bookseller – Rights – Broken Sleep Books snaps up Charles’ ‘beautiful’ poetry collection

Broken Sleep Books has snapped up A Year and Other Poems from Pulitzer Prize finalist Jos Charles.

Publisher Aaron Kent acquired UK rights, excluding the US and Canada, from Luke Ingram at the Wylie Agency. The collection will be published on 30th April 2024 and has already been published in the US by Milkweed Editions in 2022.

A Year and Other Poems gives “moments of beauty, grief, loss and joy, a moment at a time, the rhythm of the days and asks us how to live with the irrational human structure of time”. As part of the UK launch, Charles is taking up a position at the Manchester Poetry Library and the Manchester Writing School, at Manchester Metropolitan University, as the visiting international writer. Charles’ previous collection Feeld (Milkweed Editions) was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and winner of the National Poetry Series 2017.

Kent commented: “I am honoured to be publishing such a beautiful book from such a powerful voice. This collection is one of the most important books to come out of the US in the last decade. I could not be more proud to have this in the Broken Sleep catalogue, and to have the important to work with Jos.”
