New Delhi: Renowned author Ruskin Bond encapsulates the essence of Valley of Words’ (VoW) mission in curating literature for young readers — “A good children’s book takes you on an adventure, makes you think, and leaves you with a feeling of warmth”.

This year marks another exciting chapter for VoW’s annual celebration of the written word. As we delve into the monsoon reading season, 2024’s curated shortlist promises an intriguing and engaging journey for young minds.

VoW has transformed P.N. Panicker Reading Month (9 June to 19 July) into a literary feast — unveiling shortlisted contenders for the 2024 Book Awards across eight diverse categories each week.

The VoW’s dedicated translation category showcases the rich diversity of literature with titles translated from “Bhashas of Bharat” into English and Hindi, stimulating cultural exchange and sparking vital conversations. From fiction in both Hindi and English to thought-provoking non-fiction works, the 2024 VoW shortlist has created a treasure trove for every reader. Its shortlist for children’s literature does the same, with heartwarming tales of young characters embarking on journeys of self-discovery and exhilarating adventures.

The 2024 Valley of Words Shortlist for Children’s Literature includes:

  • Pagdi for Sihn, by Chitwan Mittal, published by AdiDev Press Private Limited
  • What the Dark Sounds Like, by Aparna Kapur, published by Pratham books
  • Akela, by Richa Jha, published by PickleYolk Books
  • Out in the Moonlight, by Perumal Murugan, published by Tulika
  • The Chhau Champ, by Vibha Batra, published by Penguin

The Young Adult Fiction shortlist features narratives that resonate with the complexities of growing up, exploring them with a historical and mythical lens. These books explore themes of identity, friendship, leadership, and self-discovery, weaving in a touch of nostalgia and comfort.

The 2024 Valley of Words Shortlist for Young Adults include:

  • Zen, by Shabnam Minwalla, published by Duckbill Books
  • Wayel Kati: The Quest of the Seven Guardians, by Linthoi Chanu, published by Niyogi Books
