Young quizzers shine in literature competition

On Saturday, June 15, our team of four and our coach Mrs Sutton were all up very early since we’d all agreed to be at school by 5.15am!

Why? For the Kids’ Lit Quiz, an annual literature quiz for the ‘Sport of Reading’.

The Auckland Heat was held on May 14 with 84 teams of four participating, including two teams from our school.

Teams were asked to answer 100 questions on children’s literature divided into 10 categories, which vary each year.

After a sudden-death playoff, our team placed second, only half a point behind the team that placed first!

With such a large heat (the largest in New Zealand), we qualified for the National Final – which was held at the National Library of New Zealand in Wellington on Saturday, June 15.

This time there were five categories with 15 questions in each category. You had to buzz to answer.

An incorrect answer lost a point and a correct answer gained two points.

We finished sixth out of 17 teams, only three points off third place.

I’m extremely proud of our team even though we’d aimed to place in the top four.

Congratulations to Cathedral Grammar in Canterbury who won and will go to the World Final of the Kids’ Lit Quiz, being held in Canberra, Australia.

The Kids’ Lit Quiz was a great experience and being in Wellington we also went and did a guided tour of Parliament and walked the Wellington waterfront.

Thanks to our coach Mrs Sutton and to the parents who came with us to Wellington to also cheer us on.
