Medieval Institute Publications is proud to announce that we have recently partnered with the New Books Network to produce podcast episodes featuring interviews with MIP authors! NBN is a consortium of author-interview podcast channels dedicated to introducing scholars to a wide public via new media.

Founded by Marshall Poe in 2007, NBN is the largest book–focused podcast network in the world, with over 100 subject–specific, author–interview podcast channels. MIP’s episodes will join the almost 13,000 episodes already available on the NBN website and on the major podcast apps. These episodes reach around 1 million people a month, including listeners in almost every country in the world. Typical NBN episodes are downloaded between 2,000 and 5,000 times in the first month after publication, and like books in a library, continue to be accessed indefinitely. Some of NBN’s older episodes in the catalogue have been downloaded over 50,000 times!

MIP is very excited to join NBN and to bring our brilliant authors and their books to an even bigger audience. Check out our first NBN podcast, an interview with Kyle A. Thomas and Carol Symes discussing their new book The Play about the Antichrist (Ludus de Antichristo): A Dramaturgical Analysis, Historical Commentary, and Latin Edition with a New English Verse Translation!

The Play about the Antichrist (Ludus de Antichristo): A Dramaturgical Analysis, Historical Commentary, and Latin Edition with a New English Verse Translation

Cover image of the Play About the Antichrist: a medieval image of several soldiers in a line, a man with an upraised sword holding another person by the head, and a decapitated body cartwheeling awayEdited by Kyle A. Thomas and Carol Symes

The Play about the Antichrist (Ludus de Antichristo) was composed around 1160 at the imperial Bavarian abbey of Tegernsee, at a critical point in the power-struggle between the papacy and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In this new translation, Carol Symes provides the first full and faithful rendering of the play’s dynamic language, maintaining the meter, rhyme scheme, and stage directions of the Latin original and restoring the liturgical elements embedded in the text. Kyle A. Thomas, whose dedicated research provides the foundation for an analysis of the play’s broader contexts, also brings perspectives from the first fully staged modern production that tested the theatricality of the translation and provides a new historical and dramaturgical analysis of the play’s rich interpretive and performative possibilities.
