He will be joined by an impressive interdisciplinary panel of philosophers, lawyers, and political theorists. Dr John Adenitire, Co-Director of the Forum on Decentering the Human, will chair the event. The event is co-sponsored by the Human Rights Law Centre.

Panel

Raffael Fasel is Yates Glazebrook Fellow, College Assistant Professor, and Director of Studies in Law (Part IB) at Jesus College, and Affiliated Lecturer at the Cambridge Law Faculty. He has been appointed as University Assistant Professor in Public Law taking effect from Michaelmas 2024. He specialises in public law, with a particular interest in constitutional theory, human rights law, and animal rights law. He is the Co-founder and executive director of the Cambridge Centre for Animal Rights Law.

Anne Phillips is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Government at the LSE, having previously held the position of Graham Wallas Professor of Political Science. As well as engaging with issues of democracy and representation, she has addressed the relationship between equality and difference; the uneasy relationship between feminism and liberalism, feminism and multiculturalism; and the dangers in regarding the body as property. Her most recent book is Unconditional Equals, published by Princeton University Press, 2021.

Alasdair Cochrane is Professor of Political Theory in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield. He is known for his work on animal rights from the perspective of political theory, which is the subject of his two books: An Introduction to Animals and Political Theory (2010, Palgrave Macmillan) and Animal Rights Without Liberation (2012, Columbia University Press). His third book, Sentientist Politics, was published by Oxford University Press in 2018. He is a founding member of the Centre for Animals and Social Justice, a UK-based think tank focused on furthering the social and political status of nonhuman animals.

Johanna Gibson is Herchel Smith Professor of Intellectual Property Law, Academic Director of the Intellectual Property Law LLM and the Deputy Director of the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). Johanna has published extensively in the fields of intellectual property, critical theory, and animal studies.

Merris Amos is Professor of Human Rights Law in the Department of Law and Director of the Human Rights Law Centre at Queen Mary University of London. She is an expert on the UK’s Human Rights Act 1998 and the relationship between national institutions and the European Court of Human Rights. She has published numerous articles and chapters in this field and her book Human Rights Law Third Edition (Oxford: Hart, 2021) is the leading work on the Human Rights Act.
