5 Indian lit fests that take you to the hills in 2024

This literary festival runs parallel to the popular Ziro Festival, an eco-friendly music festival. Workshops on creative writing, filmmaking, poetry, and storytelling abound, inspiring youngsters to engage in writing and create their own works. There’s also the chance to mingle with authors and journalists such as Sadiq Naqvi, Madhu Raghavendra, Karma Paljor, and Ranju Dodum.

Dehradun Literature Festival, Uttarakhand

A sea of aspiring creatives of the Doon Valley mingle with the forces of art and literature at this annual event. The festival is organised under the mentorship of Ruskin Bond, Imtiaz Ali, and Vishal Bhardwaj, and is graced by speakers such as Anamika Joshi, Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, Muzzafar Ali, and Roshen Dalal. Spread across the venues of Hyatt Regency Dehradun Resort and Spa and Doon International School, the literature festival invites manuscripts to be submitted as part of a writing competition and also nurtures open dialogue through events like book discussions, panels, and free-for-all workshops.

As tourists and locals gear up for the Cherry Blossom Festival in November, bookworms also abound as the city turns pink. This multi-discipline festival is kicked off with the smaller Shillong Literary Festival at Ward’s Lake, where everything from book launches to storytelling sessions and workshops take place against a natural backdrop. Guests also get to try local cuisines from around India at the various stalls set up by people of different states. Those interested also stay a little longer for music performances at the Cherry Blossom Festival. The last literary edition in 2023 saw Janice Pariat, Rohan Chakravarty, Sam Miller, Ankush Saikia, and Sanjoy Mukherjee take the stage. We can’t wait to see who takes the tradition forward this year.
