The Bookcase Evening Discussion Group

College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe’s life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran–and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home, after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder….

But when Vera wakes up one morning to find a dead man in the middle of her tea shop, it’s going to take more than a strong Longjing to fix things. Knowing she’ll do a better job than the police possibly could – because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands – Vera decides it’s down to her to catch the killer. Ban This Book Club

Join librarian Rebecca Harlow as we discuss Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo as a work of literature and an object of censorship. This book has been banned, restricted, or challenged in libraries in 15 states, including Connecticut. It is a National Book Award winner, a Stonewall Award winner, a Printz Honor book, and received an Asian American and Pacific Islander Librarians Award for Literature.
