At noon the Wentworth House will also host a community reading of “What to the slave is your Fourth of July,” famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass’ blistering indictment of an American idealism which ignored and accepted the inhuman treatment of enslaved African Americans. To volunteer to read a section of the speech or to request additional information about the event, send an email to paulwentworthhouse@gmail.com.

Frederick Douglass Community Read

DOVER — Saturday, June 29 at 11:30 a.m. in 2017, the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire established a successful tradition of hosting an annual public reading of Frederick Douglass’s famous speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” in communities around the state. The goal of this reading is to create dialogue on the meaning of the July 4 holiday, what it meant to the enslaved people then, and what it means to us today. Join the Dover Public Library for a community read of the speech. Interested in reading? Visit tinyurl.com/DoverFDRead to sign up.
