Discover El Paso cultural events this week: Pride Parade, El Paso Matters Book Club, more


Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

Quality of Life Care for Your Aging Loved One

El Paso Matters will host a panel discussion on how to address the challenges of caring for aging loved ones at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the Texas Tech Health Medical Sciences Building II auditorium, 5001 El Paso Drive.

“Quality of Life Care for Your Aging Loved One,” moderated by El Paso Matters Editor Cindy Ramirez, will include experts in geriatric care, services for the aging and financial counseling as well as community members who’ve had to face challenges of caring for their aging loved ones.

A Q&A session with the audience will follow the discussion, which will be livestreamed on the El Paso Matters Facebook page. Informational tables by area service agencies will be at the event and refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but encouraged.

Sun City Pride Parade Celebrates Stage and Screen

This year’s Sun City Pride Parade, “Spotlight on Pride: Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Stage and Screen,” is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, in Downtown El Paso.

Now in its 19th year, the parade starts at the intersection of East Mills Avenue and North Ochoa Street. It will head west on Mills, north on North Campbell Street to Montana Street before turning east toward Houston Park, 900 Montana Ave., where a picnic will follow.

Also as part of Pride Month, the El Paso Museum of Art is hosting a pop-up exhibit, Pose at the Museum, from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the museum, 1 Arts Festival Plaza Downtown. The event celebrates drag balls and their importance as a creative outlet for the LGBTQIA+ community. It will include displays of Andy Warhol Polaroids, screening of the documentary “Paris is Burning,” and performances by local drag artists such as  Fish the Clown, Benny Q Barker, Tyra Stark, Mz. Slurrz, Lavish RJ Rose and La Dede Camacho as emcee. Information: EPMA.Art.

Art in Eastwood Park Set for Saturday, Sunday

Local vendor shopping, entertainment and art workshops will be part of Art in Eastwood Park this weekend. The event is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 29, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at the park, 10259 Album Ave. 

Art in Eastwood Park is a collaborative event by the city of El Paso’s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department, Parks and Recreation Department, Mexican American Cultural Center and the El Paso Museum of Archaeology. Information: epmcad.org

3K Summer Walk/Run Series Returns

The 3K Summer Walk/Run series by Live Active El Paso returns this summer starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Westside Community Park, 7400 High Ridge Drive. Now in its fourth year, the event to get residents moving is held at various city parks once a month through August with fun themes, giveaways and educational booths.

The Summer Walk/Run series schedule is as follows:

  • 8-10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, Westside Community Park, 7400 High Ridge Drive, featuring a walk with your dog event.
  • 8-11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, Eastwood Park, 10259 Album Ave., featuring a back-to-school backpack drive giveaway.
  • 8-10 a.m Saturday, August 24, Marty Robbins Park, 11620 Vista Del Sol Drive, featuring a Live Active El Paso anniversary celebration.

El Paso Matters Book Club Meet Up with Daniel Chacón 

El Paso author Daniel Chacón will discuss his latest book, “The Last Philosopher in Texas: Fictions and Superstitions,” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at the El Paso Public Library Westside Branch, 125 Belvidere St.

The El Paso Matters Book Club event includes a moderated discussion and a Q&A session with Chacón, a creative writing professor at the University of Texas at El Paso. “The Last Philosopher in Texas” is Chacón’s seventh book and the book club’s latest selection.“The Last Philosopher in Texas” and other selections from the El Paso Matters Book Club will be available for purchase at the event from Literarity Book Shop. All profits benefit El Paso Matters. The event is free and open to the public. Information: El Paso Matters Book Club.
