Pell Center, RI Center for the Book present summer events featuring well-known authors – SALVEtoday


The Pell Center has joined with the RI Center for the Book to present “Summer Reads at Salve,” a new lineup of events that features outdoor discussions with authors Colin Woodard, Dawn Tripp and Curtis Sittenfeld throughout the month of July that highlight unique prospectives and allow for meaningful dialogue around important issues. All of these events will be held outside on the back lawn of Ochre Court with a beautiful view of the ocean.

“Hosting the local community with award winning authors and scholars face to face, in real life and real time, binds Salve with its neighbors and enriches Newport as a whole,” said Kate Lentz, director of the RI Center for the Book. “We are always continuing to look for new ways to further Senator Claiborne Pell’s legacy in supporting and spreading the humanities and education — and Seaside Chats supports our mission to build community through books.”

Everyone is invited to bring a lawn chair or blanket to these free seaside chats to hear local authors discuss and read excerpts from their works on the lawn of Ochre Court.

“A Story to Save America” with Colin Woodard
Wednesday, July 17, 6:30 p.m.

Colin Woodard, director of the Pell Center’s Nationhood Lab, will discuss his latest research and the “Story to Save America.” Woodard is an award-winning journalist and acclaimed author known for his insightful exploration of American history and cultural landscapes, known to delve into the complexities of regional identities and political divisions in the U.S.

This conversation underscores the Pell Center’s dedication to promoting intellectual engagement and ensuring that diverse perspectives are heard – reflecting its core values of education, community involvement and the pursuit of truth.

“Jackie: A Novel” with Dawn Tripp

Dawn Tripp, an acclaimed author known for her vivid storytelling and deep character explorations, recently published her captivating novel, “Jackie: A Novel.” This compelling work explores the life and legacy of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, offering readers a nuanced and intimate portrait of one of America’s most iconic figures.

Tripp’s upcoming Seaside Chat is a testament to the Pell Center’s commitment to fostering intellectual engagement and cultural enrichment. “Romantic Comedy” with Curtis Sittenfeld

Best-selling author Curtis Sittenfeld will discuss her latest novel, “Romantic Comedy,” about a comedy writer who thinks she’s sworn off love, until a dreamily handsome pop star flips the script on all her assumptions.

Sittenfeld, a celebrated author known for her keen observations and vivid storytelling, explores the complexities of modern relationships and societal assumptions with her characteristic wit and insight.
