Dig into live book events, the latest appearances by authors, and more with our roundup of book and literary events taking place in Houston in June 2024.

This month’s literary events showcase the serious and the whimsical in the world of reading and letters.

Acclaimed authors are in the city to sign their latest, and Houston’s literary and arts organizations come together for some original programming around books.

Here’s the scoop on what’s happening across the Bayou City this month:

Top 10 Book & Author Events in Houston: June 2024

  • Reader’s Night at Galavants Coffee | Friday, June 7 | No Cover – The Conroe coffee shop hosts this evening where book lovers can unwind with a cup of coffee, swap books with fellow readers, and shop unique book-themed products from local vendors before settling in to read. 5pm to 9pm.
  • 2-Year Party at Basket Books & Art | Saturday, June 8 | FREE – Celebrate with this Montrose neighborhood bookstore for their second anniversary by finding a bevy of choices for all types of readers during a day-long party. 11am to 7pm. 
  • Tonya Duncan Ellis at Kindred Stories | Sunday, June 9 | FREE – The writer talks about her first picture book, They Built Me for Freedom, a children’s book that tells the story of Houston’s Emancipation Park and the celebration of Juneteenth. Free to attend; books available for purchase. 2pm.
  • The Progressive Forum presents Rachel Maddow at Congregation Emanu El | Thursday, June 13 – The author and former MSNBC anchor discusses her latest book, Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism. The book explores a dark and little-known time in U.S. history, and evolved from Maddow’s podcast, Ultra. $35 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Lisa Wingate at Books-A-Million | Tuesday, June 18 – The best-selling author makes a stop in Katy to sign her latest novel, Shelterwood. Taking place in Oklahoma in 1909 and 1990, it traces the story of children abandoned by the law and the battle to see justice done. Wingate will talk about her work and research, sign books and take pictures with fans. $30; including a copy of the book. 6pm.
  • Sahaj Kaur Kohli at Asia Society Texas Center | Sunday, June 23 – Known for her internet mental health community Brown Girl Therapy, the therapist and author comes to Asia Society to discuss her debut novel, But What Will People Say? In the book, Kohli shares insights and personal experiences that offer practical tools and recommendations for navigating generational trauma, setting healthy boundaries and better understanding identity. $15. 2pm.
  • Katherine Center at Brazos Bookstore | Monday, June 24 – The author discusses and signs her latest, The Rom-Commers, about a writer who gets the chance of a lifetime working with a famous screenwriter. But he doesn’t want her help, and she’s not going down without a fight. Anticipated to be standing room only, readers are encouraged to arrive early for seating. $29; including a copy of the book. 6:30pm.
  • Inprint Houston presents Stories from the Heart of Medicine at Inprint House | Thursday, June 27 | FREE – Listen to writers share their stories about their work in the medical profession, selected from Inprint’s open call to those working in medicine. 5:30pm.
  • Walter Mosley at Murder by the Book | Saturday, June 29 | FREE – The best-selling writer signs his latest, Farewell, Amethystine. The book is the story of Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins, LA’s premier Black detective, who has his world upended when Amethystine Stoller shows up, asking him to help her find her missing ex-husband. Free to attend; books for signing must be purchased from the store. 6:30pm.
  • First Annual Storytelling Competition at Village Books | Sunday, June 30 | FREE – Think you’re a storyteller? This is your chance to find out. Contestants have five minutes to share a memorized fiction or nonfiction story, and winners will advance to the final competition this December. Registration required to tell your story. 3pm to 5pm.
