Writers book in for workshop

IT is said that everybody has a book in them and if that’s the case then the culture-rich parish of Beaufort might have to build its own library if everybody with an interest in putting pen to paper follows their dreams.

Enthusiastic members of the local retirement group have engaged in a hugely informative writing workshop with Kerry County Council’s new writer-in-residence Máire Holmes who passed on some top tips on poetry and prose in an event facilitated by the Kerry Arts Office.

They gathered at the local community centre to get the lowdown on what it takes to be a writer, how to get work published and, most importantly of all, writing for enjoyment.

Máire Holmes is editor-in-chief of The Galway Review and technology allows her to combine that role with her new position with the council.

A vastly experienced writer, she is a former member of the Board of the Society of Irish Playwrights and s shareholder of the Abbey Theatre.

She was the Hennessy Award Winner for Literary Fiction in 1988 and an outreach writer for the National University of Galway from 1998-2008. She has been a frequent contributor to RTÉ and she has penned many plays for radio.
