Happy birthday, Peggy Parish! | Manning Live

by Melissa McCoy

The Harvin Clarendon County Library recently celebrated the birthday of the late Peggy Parish, beloved local author and creator of the iconic children’s book character, Amelia Bedelia. The event, held at the library, included a special story time session, cupcakes, and an appearance by Amelia Bedelia herself, delighting children and parents alike.

“We’ve been honoring Peggy Parish’s legacy with story time sessions for years, but this was our first time celebrating her birthday with a party,” said Lakesha Meredith, the Children’s Librarian. “Darlene Bryant, one of our staff members, dressed up as Amelia Bedelia and brought the character to life for the kids. She’s been fantastic in this role since she joined us last year.”

Approximately 42 children attended the event, which also featured birthday card-making activities. “We had some truly touching cards,” Meredith shared. “One, made by my 17-year-old daughter Alana, thanked Amelia Bedelia for being a part of her childhood.” It was a heartfelt moment that underscored the lasting impact of Parish’s work.

Parish, born on July 14, 1927, in Manning, authored over 30 books during her career. Her Amelia Bedelia series, known for its literal-minded protagonist who humorously misinterprets instructions, has become a staple in children’s literature. Parish’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the community and beyond.

“I posted about our event on Facebook, and a woman shared a photo of herself with the Amelia Bedelia statue in front of the library. It’s clear how much these stories mean to people here,” Meredith reflected.

The celebration was part of the library’s summer programming, which includes a mix of traditional and new activities. “We’ve had great success with our summer programs,” Meredith noted. “We’ve introduced new events like a science-themed storyteller and a fossil dig with Fossil Frank. We’re also excited to have Zach’s Laser Tag at the Weldon Gym for our older kids.”

The community’s affection for Parish’s work was highlighted by a touching moment shared by a young attendee early this year. “During a story time session at Manning Elementary, a little girl named Sadie proudly told me that her great-grandparents raised the money for the Amelia Bedelia statue. It’s moments like these that show how deeply Peggy Parish’s stories are woven into the fabric of our community.”

The Harvin Clarendon County Library encourages residents to follow their Facebook page or visit their website at clarendoncountylibrary.com for updates on upcoming events and programs.
