You undoubtedly know something about Jerry Korum. It may be that you’re familiar with his last name, seen on signs for area car dealerships and on the license-plate brackets of the countless vehicles those dealerships have sold. Or perhaps you know him for his local philanthropy and for his work with Pierce College, an institution he didn’t graduate from, yet one he still considers his.

Once the youngest Ford car dealer in the United States and now retired, Korum has added a new title to his many: author. His recently released book, “Drive: Living a Life with Purpose, From A to Z,” highlights his accomplishments; 52 years of marriage to his late wife, Germaine; and, as the title suggests, the A-to-Z principles he learned over his years as a successful businessperson.

Throughout the 192-page hardbound book, Korum shares the alphabetical principles he used to pass out to people he’d meet along his life’s path. There’s A for “attitude,” B for “believe,” C for “creativity.” There are photos of Korum growing up and of him throughout his life — with Germaine, other family members, and business associates.

But what there’s most of — and what makes this book a valuable read to those looking for inspiration to excel at business and life — are Korum’s stories: Stories of a well-lived life once derailed by a battle with alcohol and resurrected by religion, stories of failure and triumph, stories of life.

Here’s a striking excerpt from the “Growth” chapter:

“Growth is the expression of our being. We are designed to grow. If we are not growing, we are dying. When I talk to businesspeople, I tell them that they can put blinders on when it comes to their growth. But if they take the time to focus on different areas — life faith, health, family, work and community — and give serious thought to the steps needed to move forward, the effort can be transformative.”

To order a copy of Korum’s book, email jerry@korum.com or call (253) 279-3000. The cost is $25 and proceeds go to the Korum For Kids Foundation.
